Things to do in Portovenere with kids
A Family Adventure in Portovenere and La Spezia
Discover The Bay of Poets
Portovenere is often celebrated for its crystalline waters, but for families with small kids who want more than just sand between their toes, this UNESCO World Heritage gem and the neighboring city of La Spezia
offer a wealth of history, scenic walks, and discovery.

Perched high above the town, this medieval fortress is a dream for young explorers. The climb up the narrow, winding streets is an adventure in itself, and once at the top, children can roam the ancient walls while parents enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf of Poets.

Walk to the tip of Portovenere where the bay meets the sea at the rocky promontory to see the Church of San Pietro and the dramatic sea caves below. While too rocky for small children to swim safely, the dramatic fortress feel of the church and the crashing waves are captivating for little ones.

Portovenere Islands
Take a boat trip around Portovenere’s three islands: Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto to see lighthouses and historic ruins from the water. If hiking is a family favorite then take the ferry from the Portovenere waterfront to Palamaria Island and spend the day hiking the trails of Palmaria for incredible flora and fauna.

The Cinque Terre
Take the ferry from Portovenere to The Cinque Terre as the villages are incredibly beautiful coming in from the sea. A day ticket allows you to hop on and off at your own pace. Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso all have water access, only Corneglia is not on the water but in the hills and can be visited by train.

La Spezia Museo Navale
Visit the La Spezia Naval Museum, a top recommendation for families. Kids can see real submarines, intricate ship models, and historic figureheads. It’s an indoor educational option for a break from the sun.

La Spezia Museo Civico
The Civic Museum of La Spezia was founded in 1873. It is located in the Castle of San Giorgio, the monument which best represents the historical events of the city of La Spezia. Situated on a small hill called “Poggio” and dominating the neighborhood of late medieval formation. The fortress dates back to the second half of the 14th century.
